About this cause

Abbeyfield Newcastle (member of the Abbeyfield Society) has two care homes in the Gosforth area of Newcastle upon - Tyne: one at The Grove (NE1 1HN) which is home to 24 elderly residents and the other at Castle Farm. Core to our care principles is to provide a range of activities that our residents can enjoy: from music appreciation and art, to getting out and about. We recognise that opportunities to develop new skills is important throughout our lives, and that friendship and connection is critically important, especially for older people who experience a high level of loneliness and isolation. We change lives through enhanced well-being, raising self-esteem, supporting older people to form new friendships and supporting older people to stay healthier and happier for longer.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Tovertafel (or Magic Table) supports people with dementia to stay physically and socially active. A recent innovation from The Netherlands, it consists of a light box suspended from the ceiling which projects interactive games onto a table below. The games consist of light animations that respond to movement: in one hand moment the table can become autumn leaves, a pond full of fish or a beautiful array of flowers. Simple hand or arm movements sees the leaves sway in the breeze or the fishes swim away. We would like to purchase a Tovertafel for our residents (many with dementia) and run a series of coffee mornings for people with dementia in the wider community to come and join us to play Tovertafel and experience its benefits with an additional opportunity to make new friends.
