New Shallal Community Dance Outreach Group in Penzance
Social Inclusion
Shallal would like to start a new and much needed improvised dance theatre group in Penzance to include people with support needs.
About this cause
Shallal is a Cornish charity with 25 yrs experience providing high quality arts and performance opportunities for people with disabilities and learning difficulties including Down’s syndrome, Autism, physical, sensory and hidden impairments and mental health problems, breaking down barriers of prejudice so vulnerable people can play a more inclusive role in society. Shallal enables people from all backgrounds, ages and abilities to enjoy dance/theatre/arts to increase life opportunities, promote personal development, and emotional and physical well being. Shallal’s 3 main areas: 1. Community outreach programme offers regular dance/movement/theatre groups across Cornwall. 2. Main Performing Company where community group members can progress to. 3. Shallal Studios offering visual arts.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Building on successful community groups for example in Falmouth, Shallal aims to pilot a new community dance group in Penzance, offering improvised dance, movement and social time to all. Penzance is Shallal’s base and we have strong links with the Acorn who are keen to host the group one morning a week term time May - end October 2017. Shallal has experienced inclusive dance facilitators trained in meeting the full range of support needs to enable a fun, safe, creative environment. The group will help people to make friends and gain skills at the same time as exploring creative self-expression. Our groups are successful in integrating socially isolated vulnerable people back into society through improved confidence, gains in physical and emotional health and greater social contact.
