About this cause

Reach supports adults with learning disabilities in Nottinghamshire to achieve happier, healthier lives. We offer 60+ fun, engaging courses and socials at our five centres including Reach Southwell and Flower Pod Southwell. Over 250 people a week attend our centres. We also offer holidays, day trips and special projects tackling barriers to a better quality of life, as well as providing information and advice to family carers. The people we support face many challenges including a high risk of avoidable poor health, loneliness, social exclusion and poverty. Our activities are embedded with opportunities for adults with learning disabilities to build confidence and self-esteem, gain new skills for greater independence and better health, and play a more active role in their community.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our Compost Group Project will connect adults with learning disabilities and local volunteers to work together to create an accessible new compost bay at our Flower Pod Southwell Centre. Supported by an experienced project worker, all group members will collaborate to research, design and build the compost bay, learning about the importance of compost to soil and food production, finding out about reducing food waste, what items can be composted, and enhancing flower pods accessibility. Participants will gain transferable skills and knowledge that can benefit them in their home kitchens and gardens. Activities will be participatory, with group members collaborating to learn and problem-solve, enabling adults with learning disabilities to become more confident, active 'green citizens'.
