Dunstable Men in Sheds
People: Helping older people feel connected
Our shed aims to produce good quality finished items for supply to local organisations. Much of our equipment was donated to us when we started, so worn out equipment needs replacing.

About this cause
We aim to provide a workshop for predominantly retired people to meet. They pass on their knowledge of woodworking skills learnt over a lifetime of work. Participating in community projects helps the wider community, often making items that the recipients would not be able to afford, also reducing isolation and loneliness amongst our members. We use almost exclusively recycled materials donated to us from local businesses. In this way, landfill is reduced.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Our shed provides a valuable meeting place for largely retired people, who may feel isolated from society due to bereavement or isolation issues. We undertake projects from schools and local groups. We are currently making a number of items for Dunstable Town Council, namely a number of planters and a bench to be installed at the rear of the old fire station. All of these items are made from recycled materials that would otherwise go to landfill. We support Dunstable in Bloom with a number of projects around the Town. We have produced bird boxes and bat boxes for the National Trust. Our overall aim is to provide a friendly working environment where members can learn new skills whilst remaining connected with society.
