Hedgehog Rescue

Planet: Protecting nature

We would like to purchase 6 veterinary grade pens for our hedgehog hospital. Veterinary grade pens are more hygienic and durable, helping us take the best care of our prickly patients.

About this cause

Our volunteer-run hedgehog hospital, co-ordinated by Yvonne Cox, is a self-funded not-for-profit organisation that rescues over 500 hedgehogs every year. The mission of Hedgehog Rescue is to care, treat and rehabilitate as many sick, injured or orphaned hedgehogs as our fundraising allows with the purpose of releasing them back into nature. It is also an ongoing goal to raise awareness and support for this red listed endangered species through awareness workshops (educational talks), community events, information sharing (events, newsletter and social media) and providing emergency advice (direct callers and social media). The hedgehog hospital is very much community-focused, providing work experience opportunities for students and a network of volunteers.

How this cause brings people in the community together

By supporting and re-releasing hedgehogs we are helping this endangered species to survive for everyone to enjoy. We involve the local community by providing volunteering opportunities for people of diverse abilities, ages, genders and nationalities. We provide much-needed hands-on work experience for college and university students, and raise awareness of how to protect and support hedgehogs by giving educational talks to a variety of community groups such as schools, residential homes, Scouts, women's institute, gardening clubs and businesses. Volunteers from Hedgehog Rescue share information via our newsletter, website and social media, and respond to requests for emergency advice via calls and social media, sending volunteer couriers to retrieve sick or injured hedgehogs if needed.
