About this cause

We are a community project that has been running for 15 years. To provide the people of Whickham and its surrounding communities with a sustainable facility for education, relaxation and social interaction between the generations, through the medium of a refurbished Victorian Garden. It is now the intention to extend the project to further develop the garden into an area where people can understand conservation as well as further understand the world around them. It is the intention to include birds within the garden in a number of aviaries to explain the relationship between people and the world around them. It will educate, encourage, and offer opportunity to work with various associated projects improving peoples understanding, enjoyment and knowledge.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The garden is an important green space within an urban environment. It offers an opportunity to visit a garden and enjoy its benefits. The addition of aviaries is to allow a number of birds to be included in the garden, encouraging additional visitors, especially groups not inclined to visit gardens. The aviaries will offer themed areas, such as a seaside area, a marsh, a jungle, American prairie etc, which will be planted accordingly and contain birds that live in these habitats. It will be a relaxing place to visit, but offer education about conservation, ecology, and even breeding projects. These benefits will be available to all age and community groups, as well as individuals with a particular interest.
