People: Improving people’s mental wellbeing

We wish to offer a programme of festive activities for our homeless and at-risk families over Christmas. This will enhance their mental wellbeing through new experiences and close the gap with peers.

About this cause

Save the Family offers temporary housing and round-the-clock support to homeless and complex families with a history informed by trauma. With tailored assistance from a trauma-informed mentoring team, our purpose is to keep families together where possible and reintegrate them back into the community, equipped with the skills and resilience to have positive and fulfilling futures. Located at a rural location for the safety of our families, many families are local; however, we take referrals from across the country. Between 2023-24, over 70% of our families struggled with their mental health, 68% had experienced domestic abuse and 44% of adults had experienced financial difficulty or debt.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our programme of festive activities will ensure that our homeless and at-risk families have a joyful Christmas, celebrating the festive period with one another and creating special memories that they will cherish for life. We would like to offer our families the opportunity to have breakfast with Santa, prepare, cook and come together as a family for a community Christmas dinner, have a Christmas party, go on an ice skating trip and attend a Christmas pantomime. For many of our families, spending Christmas with us will be the first year that they can relax and enjoy the festive period, without the worries and trauma associated with being homeless. For our children and young people, support will enable them to return to school having had the same experiences as their peers.
