About this cause

Since 1956, Abbeyfield has provided safe and welcoming homes for older people who might otherwise feel isolated and alone. This charitable ethos is at the centre of everything we do. Speedwell Court is home to around 80 people, many living with dementia. Our dedicated staff are experienced in caring for people with dementia and work hard to create a welcoming environment for all. Our monthly Lunch Club at Speedwell Court offers an opportunity for people from the local community who have a dementia diagnosis to socialise in a friendly, supportive environment.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Currently, over 900,000 people in the UK have dementia, and many live at home cared for by family, often their spouse. Often both the person with dementia and their carer can feel isolated, or awkward in social situations. Our Lunch Club offers an opportunity for people from the local community who have been diagnosed with dementia to socialise in a friendly, supportive environment. Carers, who accompany their loved one, enjoy a much-needed break and a chance to relax and meet others living with similar challenges. Everyone benefits from the mental wellbeing boost of socialising whilst enjoying a delicious, hot meal.
