The Magdalene Project
People: Improving people’s mental wellbeing
We wish to offer more paid sessional hours to our trained counsellors to meet the need in our area. We aim to reduce our waiting times for those who are desperate for help.

About this cause
The Magdalene Project is an independent Christian counselling service covering East Lancashire, specialising in sexual trauma and abuse, working with all ages, gender, ethnicity, religion and social background, irrespective of their ability to pay. Our goal is to bring trauma survivors into a place of recovery and provide much-needed long-term, trauma-informed counselling and psychotherapy, which the NHS is unable to provide locally. We continue to provide heavily subsidised counselling to the poorest and most vulnerable sections of society, who would otherwise be unable to access these services. Often, the nature of their trauma means they can't hold down employment as they live in a constant mode of survival.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Our project will help trauma survivors to heal and make necessary changes in their lives to be able to get past their survival state of mind and thrive in the community. Research proves working with trauma as soon as possible reduces the risk of developing long-term difficulties such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and intent. People are able to explore shame and guilt due to abuse and work through their trauma in a safe place. People presenting with severe anxiety will be able to release the strongholds they experience due to overwhelming emotions that sexual trauma presents and it is then they feel able to integrate themselves in their community, build new relationships and move forward as a survivor.
