The Village Turners
People: Helping older people feel connected
We aim to provide woodturning facilities for both young and old, able-bodied and disabled, creating a welcoming, safe and friendly atmosphere where artistic people can create beauty in wood.

About this cause
We are a local woodturning club. We aim to foster a greater awareness of the ancient art of woodturning. Our club consists of 46 members and we want to increase this number by bringing in members from youth organisations and armed forces veterans who are suffering from mental health issues. We also wish to expand our workshop capability to include a disabled lathe, which would allow people with physical disabilities to partake in our craft. We are a friendly group and we offer classes to other organisations such as the U3A. The club has been in existence since the early 1980s. We are one of only a handful of clubs that has its own workshop and provide facilities to our membership in the form of 10 lathes along with all the necessary equipment. We want to expand this.
How this cause brings people in the community together
We aim to purchase a new woodturning lathe that enables both able-bodied and disabled people to make beautiful artistic items with wood and other materials. The project is aimed at everyone over the age of 12 years. By teaching the next generation this ancient craft, we will secure its future for generations to come. Our secondary aim is to provide a safe and secure environment for those suffering from modern-day mental health issues. This craft skill creates focus and relieves the mind of the everyday stresses of modern life. It provides an outlet for creativity and in some cases, can lead to a new career.
