About this cause

Bowburn Banner Group has obtained and conserved two original banners of the Bowburn Miners Lodge, from 1920 and 1959, and these are now on permanent display in the local community centre. It has also commissioned two modern banners which are regularly in use at local community and countywide heritage events. The group organises some of these community events, seeking to involve and include as many members of the local community as possible, of all ages. We also promote live (mostly brass band) music and give talks and presentations at local schools. By these means, we aim to raise an awareness of, and a local pride in, the heritage of mining communities.

How this cause brings people in the community together

High quality IT equipment, principally a portable computer and a printer, will allow the Banner Group to operate effectively without relying on the good will and resources of members and well-wishers. We will be able to gather all our images, records and archives in one place. New and future members will be able to produce presentations, for schools and community events, and high quality publicity and exhibition material. The wider community will benefit, as our activities will be more prominent. New members will be attracted to get involved. Our former mining village has grown enormously into a commuter village, in recent years. We aim to include all villagers, new and old, helping to bring the whole community together in appreciation and enjoyment of the village’s mining heritage.
