People: Supporting young people to fulfil their potential

We would like to set up an outdoor community cooking area with a large fire pit and seating, to help young people interact, gain confidence, enjoy the outdoor life, and improve mental wellbeing.

About this cause

Slough Fort is a Victorian fortification at Allhallows on the Hoo Peninsula. Slough Fort Preservation Trust (SFPT) is a small charity established in 2017 to restore and transform the Fort into a community facility and tourist destination. We are volunteer-led and operated by a Trust Board of six trustees who meet monthly and are supported by around forty volunteers, mostly from Allhallows and the surrounding villages. We have successfully transformed much of what was essentially a ruin into viable, usable community space, including extensive grounds which contain a community orchard, beehives, wildlife areas, and a meadow used by local youth groups and schools for forest school activities, picnics, and camping. We operate regular tours of the historic Fort and special events.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our community fire pit will help give the youth of the area a sense of belonging, and build confidence to interact with others, whilst creating memories for life. It can be used as a space to share stories and support the idea of different age groups working together and interacting. Older youth will be able to build life skills such as passing on their knowledge and developing leadership skills, which will help as they grow older and enter the work environment.
