Planet: Protecting nature

We plan to create a scree garden as a habitat for wildlife – to develop bush habitat to preserve and enhance the area for insects such as ground nesting bees, beetles and moths.

About this cause

We are the subsidiary of registered mental health employability charity, Fife Employment Access Trust, and our focus is on redeveloping and regenerating Silverburn Park, a 27-acre public park comprising gardens and woodlands on the Fife Coastal Path. With just a small staff team, we are reliant on the support of volunteers from all sectors of the community as well as our charity's service users to help us maintain and improve the Park. Working with our parent charity we are also taking on the running of a visitor centre in the Park from 2026: the B-listed semi-derelict former flax mill is being redeveloped to become a visitor centre and community hub including a cafe/restaurant and hostel accommodation, building on our existing enterprising activity of a camping/glamping site and cafe.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our new scree garden will be educational in nature. Our gardener has developed a vision for the entire walled garden at Silverburn Park, and this is just one element of that wider programme. We have an existing base of volunteers from the local community ranging from green-fingered retired people to people facing multiple disadvantages and taking part in employability or therapeutic activity. We also receive many visits from local schools and nurseries who take part in various environmental education and outdoor activities. All of these groups can get involved in implementing this project, understanding the benefits to nature, and how we will manage and maintain the area once established. 300,000+ annual park visitors will also benefit from a new addition to the walled garden.
