About this cause

The NMC is a pioneering charity based in Winsfor. We provide a range of support and services to young people and adults, their families and carers from across Cheshire and the North West, who are affected by Muscular Dystrophy (MD). Our range of services include ongoing physiotherapy (not available for adults with MD through statutory means), supported training/employment opportunities as well as information, advice/support services. We are the only Centre of its kind in the UK and receive no government funding. We provide a unique combination of life enhancing opportunities and support and our sole aim is to improve the quality of life for people affected by this progressive muscle-wasting condition – such a vital service that really does impact positively on so many people’s lives.

How this cause brings people in the community together

An area of NMC's garden is being made into fully accessible allotments. Our entire community and the wider community can work the land and benefit from it regardless of their disability. For those with Muscular Dystrophy and other physical disabilities, it can be very difficult to access gardening which is known to have a positive impact on one's overall health and well-being. The project involves building accessible raised beds/walkways + a greenhouse. Adapted tools + seeds will be needed so fruit and veg can be grown. All interested NMC service users will help build and manage it (we support over 1,700 people) - those with MD, carers, family members. The wider aim is to rent out small allotment areas to other local groups/charities and to use it for educational purposes.
