People: Supporting young people to fulfil their potential

We are aiming this project at children who rarely participate in sporting activities. Our programme will offer the children an opportunity to get active and help them to stay fit and healthy.

About this cause

Established in 2008, Durham FC is a grassroots football club based in Durham City. We currently have numerous teams – Under 6s to Under 15s plus a senior side who play in the Wearside League Premier Division. We have over 150 junior members who train and play every week. Here at Durham FC, we're committed to ensuring the next generation of young footballers have a safe and fun environment in which to play football. However, we also want children with limited football ability to get involved. Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, fit children are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges. Exercise improves school performance and makes children less likely to develop depression.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We would like to create opportunities for children with little or no football skills, to train every week and become part of the Durham FC family. Activity from an early age should be encouraged as it benefits a child's development. We aim to make being active a part of daily life for local children who don't currently participate in any activities. We want the children to have fun, so they will come back for more. The physical health benefits of regular exercise for young ones are well known. What’s less explored is how movement can help with restlessness, worry, anxiety and a lack of focus in children. Whatever age the child is, physical activity is a great way to improve their overall mood and build positive relationships with others.
