About this cause
PROMISEworks is a charity that supports disadvantaged children and young people across Somerset, through volunteer mentoring. Each mentor gives two hours weekly/fortnightly and we ask for a commitment of two years. We use Bowlby’s attachment theory, which recognises that by building a secure, positive relationship, you can aid resilience and enhance mental wellbeing. This can transform the path of the young person, helping them to feel safe, secure and worthy. Many of these children will have never experienced the benefits of security and trust that mentors bring into their lives. We work with children and young people from the age of 5 to 25 years. This year alone, we have received over 160 referrals. 76% of the children and young people referred have experienced some form of abuse.
How this cause brings people in the community together
PROMISEworks facilitates life-enhancing relationships across generations, making connections, building friendships and creating memories. Volunteer mentoring is a two-way journey and can be extremely rewarding, for both the mentor and mentee, establishing secure and positive relationships within the local community. We support children and young people to have a sense of self-worth and belonging. There are many adverse life experiences that can impact a child or young person's mental wellbeing, including poverty, abuse and social isolation. At PROMISEworks, we work hard to ensure that by successfully matching mentees with a mentor, we can promote an enabling environment for the child and young person.
