Dementia Friendly Parishes around the Yealm
People: Improving people’s mental wellbeing
Our project helps people with dementia in our five rural Devon communities to remain active and involved in community life.
About this cause
We are a small local rural charity working in the five parishes of Wembury, Brixton, Yealmpton, Newton Ferrers & Noss Mayo and Holbeton in the South Hams. We aim to support and improve the lives of people living with dementia, as well as their families and carers, and we enable people with dementia to remain active and involved in all areas of community life. We work alongside local groups, organisations and businesses to develop suitable activities and services, including regular inclusive groups and one-to-one support for families. We are committed to raising awareness and understanding about dementia, and creating more dementia-friendly communities.
How this cause brings people in the community together
The groups we set up are dementia-friendly and are for all people, not just those living with dementia and their carers. It is of vital importance that families continue to take part and have fun alongside members of their community rather than being separated off into groups of people with dementia only. Those living with dementia are actively encouraged to attend and those without dementia are given the information and training to ensure that everyone feels both valued and an important part of the group. We can’t change the person living with dementia, but we can change the experience they have in their community.
