About this cause

Singing together in a supportive, friendly group is uplifting, enjoyable and hugely therapeutic for people living with dementia and family carers alike. Music is a powerful connector that helps people with dementia communicate, express feelings and share moments of joy, poignancy and remembrance together with others. Although well-loved classics are part of the mix, we also learn new songs, sing rhymes and action songs that help physical co-ordination, and tackle harmonies, rounds and partner songs. There is a lot of laughter! Members are encouraged to suggest songs and the atmosphere is warm and friendly with everyone taking part in their own way. The group is led by a professional singing teacher who is trained in dementia awareness and supported by dedicated volunteers.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Meeting others, making new friends and enjoying each other's company are, for many of our members, as important as the singing! Amesbury Music for the Mind reduces loneliness through regular opportunities to join like-minded people for fun activities in a group. Music is fun and therapeutic, and an extremely effective way to entice people who are at risk of becoming lonely to get out of their homes and out and about in their local community. This will make Amesbury stronger by showing that local people living with dementia can still be an active part of their community. Our groups can also be the entry point for people with dementia and their carers to find out about further help they can receive.
