About this cause

b-side is an arts organisation and an annual festival that celebrates its home, the Isle of Portland. We bring together artists, from across Portland and across the world, to work with Portland communities to make new art that tells the story of Portland's people and places; both our shared histories and future hopes. The Isle of Portland is a place of unique natural and cultural beauty. It is also a place that is currently suffering extreme and growing levels of multiple deprivation. Young people on the island are particularly affected by a lack of investment and resources. With your support, b-side's goal is to give creative opportunities to young people across Portland throughout the year to forge positive life goals and career paths.

How this cause brings people in the community together

New Island Creatives is a year-round b-side arts programme for young people on Portland. At a time when youth clubs are closing down or at risk, unemployment is high and wages are not meeting the rising cost of living, we will work with Portland groups – Islanders Club and the Drop In – to offer high-quality creative skills, giving young people new activities, and ensuring their ideas and voices are heard. Young people will learn how to make and produce arts events. Training will consist of: selecting ideas, contracting artists, managing budgets, delivering the event and evaluating impact. All these skills are essential for working in the arts and also useful for wider employment.
