About this cause

The RSPCA Durham and District Branch is an unincorporated charitable organisation and a separately registered branch of the RSPCA (the Society) carrying out its direct animal welfare work in County Durham. The Branch is ran by voluntary Trustees who have been associated with the Branch for some time and have to stand for election at the AGM. We take in animals that have been abandoned and also brought in by the Inspectors. We also work alongside the Inspectors to help prevent suffering to animals. We provide financial assistance for people on benefits to have their pets chipped etc. Our animals are cared for at Deerness Kennels in Langley Moor. We work closely with the staff and have our own facilities. Sales from our 2 charity shops and fundraising events help support our cause.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Animals in our care receive veterinary treatment, vaccinations, neutering and microchipping before they are rehomed. Free or reduced cost neutering and microchipping is offered to companion animals for those in the Branch area on low incomes through issuing vouchers which are redeemable at local vets. This helps control the dog, cat, ferret and rabbit populations and thereby relieves the financial burden on low income families. This work benefits the local community by preventing animals straying and enabling lost animals to be reunited with their owners through the microchip. The Branch responds to enquiries from the public and via the Society's national call centre about animals locally and the public benefits from knowing that we can assist animals in need in their locality.
