About this cause

Stepping Stones DS is a Down Syndrome support group set up in December 2006 by two Mums of daughters with Down syndrome of a similar age. They found there was a lack of support in the local area. Based on the NE Hampshire/Surrey/Berkshire borders the group now supports over 120 children and their families, from babies to teenagers. The group is run entirely by volunteers and provides a wide range of activities giving both practical and emotional support. These include speech and language therapy, horse riding, dance and drama, ball skills, music and movement, coffee mornings. There is training for parents and professionals who work with the children, outreach into schools and social events for Mums, Dads, siblings and the family as a whole.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our therapy groups provide developmental therapy for babies 4-18 months, also speech and language therapy for preschoolers. Facilitated by a Speech and Language Therapist specialised in Down Syndrome, the session includes support and information for parents and targets across the range of development including; communication, speech, receptive and expressive language, number, memory, reading, play and cognition. For the younger children in the group we will include activities for parents to carry out with their children throughout the month to support and promote development. For the older children we would provide therapy to meet targets across the range of development including; communication, speech, receptive and expressive language, number, memory, reading, play and cognition.
