Learn English Together in Merton
People: Improving people’s mental wellbeing
We'd like to host outdoor walks for our learners who are refugees, asylum seekers and migrants to practice their English and improve their physical and mental health.
About this cause
We are a local Merton charity who support refugees, asylum seekers and migrants (English Speakers of Other Languages; ESOL) to learn English in the London Borough of Merton. We run formal classes, one-to-one tuition and conversation groups, and have been supporting people in Merton since 2009. With Co-op funding we would like to run community green activities such as ESOL walks for our learners where they can practice their English. These activities help not only improve language skills, but reduce social isolation, increase confidence and improve physical and mental health. They are particularly important for newly arrived refugees who can also share experiences and offer wellbeing support to each other.

How this cause brings people in the community together
This project will support refugees, asylum seekers and migrants to Learn English together whilst also improving physical and mental wellbeing. With many of our learners having faced trauma, deprivation and racial inequality, the importance of getting outside and participating in physical exercise through an organised walk with their peers alongside learning English is critical for improved wellbeing and mental health. They also get to interact and learn more about their local community such as parks, transport, local facilities but in a fun and interactive way.
