Bexley Snap
People: Supporting young people to fulfil their potential
We host an after school club for disabled children aged 8-13 years; it is a safe place for socialisation, creativity, art, gardening and physical activities, and somewhere attendees can be themselves.
About this cause
Since 1994, Bexley Snap has supported more than 2,000 disabled children and young people (CYP) aged between 1-25 years. We do this through a variety of activities, clubs and events to aid communication, development, social interactions and independent living skills. We tailor support, enabling participation to the best of individual ability, and actively seek user engagement to shape and improve our services. Our sessions for pre-school children provide support at the earliest opportunity and reduces their sense of isolation. We believe disabled CYP should have the same life chances as their peers, and the opportunity to choose leisure activities which match their aspirations.
How this cause brings people in the community together
We would like to sustain a weekly term-time after school club for one year, providing essential socialisation to disabled children and young people aged 8-13 years with autism, who often struggle to understand/communicate their feelings and emotions. They can experience behaviours that challenge and may not be able to logically process their actions. The focus of this club is to support individuals to understand and improve their mental wellbeing through socialisation, gaining new friendships, experiencing new/repeated enjoyable activities, increasing physical activities and building independent living skills.
