About this cause

Our local Activities group meets weekly for singing and gentle exercise in a supportive and friendly group setting. Research has shown the benefits of singing for people with memory and cognitive problems. Our team includes therapists who are specialists in their field and trained in dementia awareness. Sessions start with a gentle warm-up before moving on to the main activity; everyone is encouraged to do as much or little as they feel able to - you don’t need to have talent to take part! People with limited mobility and wheelchair users are welcome and the session lasts for about an hour, at the end of which refreshments are served.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Meeting others, creating connections and enjoying each other's company are, for many of our members, as important as the activities. Our activities group also reduces the risk of loneliness through regular weekly opportunities for both those living with dementia and their carers to join other people for music and exercise. This is an extremely effective way to entice people who are at risk of becoming lonely to get out of their homes and to make new friends. This in turn will make the wider community stronger by helping local people living with dementia to achieve their full potential. Our groups are also often the entry point for people with dementia and their carers to access further help.
