Callum's Voice

Mental wellbeing

The waiting list for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) can be up to 24 months. So we aim to provide counselling, to help young people access the support they need now.

About this cause

Callum's Voice is a charity that has been founded in the memory of a young man named Callum, who unfortunately took his own life in 2019. Callum had autism and struggled with difficulties linked to this such condition such as: understanding others, developing relationships and friendships, difficulties with communication, and expressing and understanding emotions. Callum had been receiving support from CAMHS, but unfortunately this support ended upon reaching the age of 18. Without this support Callum found the world too scary a place to be in. The charity aims to prevent other young neurodiverse people or those with mental health needs from experiencing the same difficulties and ultimately prevent the suicide of these young people.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our project aims to support young people (and their families) who have a range neurodiverse conditions including: autism and ADHD, and/or associated mental health needs such as depression, anxiety and low mood. Many of these children and young people are on a waiting list to receive support from CAMHS, but this can take up to 24 months and they are in need of help now. The funded counselling sessions project is able to offer this help now, providing early intervention that can drastically reduce the risk of a further deterioration of a young person's mental health and the risk of self harm and suicidal behaviours. Our counselling project will genuinely make a positive difference to the lives of young people in need.
