About this cause

Oasis Cardiff is an organisation that has been operating for 15 years. Since its origins in 2008, Oasis has grown from being entirely run by volunteers to a community hub that welcomes over 4,500 asylum seekers and refugees per year from across South Wales, with 100–200 daily visitors. The range of projects, activities and services available enables us to provide far-reaching, holistic support to people with complex needs. Our support includes a daily hot meal, casework support, English classes, and art, sport and music activities. Our aim is to restore dignity and empower asylum seekers and refugees to build language, cultural and job-related skills that help them to integrate into their communities and flourish in Wales.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our project will continue providing a nutritious lunchtime meal to hundreds of asylum seekers and refugees per day. Many asylum seekers and refugees experience financial hardship due to the small stipend they receive, which does not match inflation. We know from surveying our clients that the cost-of-living crisis, particularly the rising costs of food, is having a drastic effect on refugees' mental health. Receiving a daily meal free of charge relieves some financial pressure for the people who visit Oasis, as it is one less meal per day they need to worry about. 79% of clients have said that receiving a free lunchtime meal at Oasis helps them during the cost-of-living crisis. Thus, this project will continue to be a lifeline for asylum seekers and refugees.
