About this cause

Freightliners City Farm is a small urban green space at the heart of the London Borough of Islington which brings a little bit of the countryside to the inner city. It provides activities for the local community based on farming, animal care, gardening, food production, traditional crafts and nature. The focus is on education with guided and self guided learning opportunities, participation through volunteering and community events and ecotherapies. There are 60 regular volunteers each week. Our supported and therapeutic programmes particularly target those in need including young people and people with learning disabilities or mental health issues. Each year we host around 40,000 visitors, 3500 school and nursery pupils and 25-30 young people on education and training programmes.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The project will support the development and delivery of educational activities for children and young people through the busy spring and summer period on the farm. It will provide tailored guided tours and hands on gardening, crafts and food production workshops for school groups. A weekly animal based after school session and drop in school holiday activities. The project will provide 1000 school children with guided visits enabling them to see farm animals in real life. For many of the children visiting the farm is their first experience of animals, countryside environments and seeing food growing. It will provide up to 300 local children and their families with free holiday activities encouraging families to spend time outdoors, learn and play together and experience new things.
