About this cause

Based on a former quarry near Forfar, Angus, we manage a thriving nature reserve, visitor farm & tearoom, providing opportunities for young people in Angus & Dundee (aged 14-19) who are disengaged from formal education, to gain meaningful vocational qualifications in hospitality and land based skills. As an SQA vocational training centre attending Murton makes a real difference, helping young people improve their prospects and fulfill their potential. We motivate and inspire young people to raise their aspirations, develop an interest in learning whilst gaining qualifications that support their future chances, giving them social skills and confidence to participate in other education/opportunities at school and progress on to positive destinations. We also run an outdoor tots group weekly.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Creating an outdoor classroom at Murton in a tepee, enables us to build a program featuring workshops, talks, & presentations for all ages, extending our educational work. We will capture nature on film, demonstrating unseen behaviour of wildlife which is presented to groups to assist with learning. Visits from local groups, including schools, playgroups, uniformed groups & disability support groups are limited at present due to weather & not having suitable space for them to use. The tepee provides this. Contact with nature produces physical, mental and emotional benefits particularly for children and we wish to encourage and promote this interaction with the natural environment in fun informative sessions. Staff will lead 1 session a week for up to 6 hours including preparation time.
