About this cause

St Petrock’s is a small, innovative, Exeter-based charity, which helps local people who are homeless or vulnerably housed to move forwards into healthier, more fulfilling lives. From our open-access resource centre and through our community work, we provide a range of emergency, advice & prevention services to help people re-build their lives and make the transition to independent living. These include: basic survival services for rough sleepers; housing advice & referral; on-site health, mental health & support services; specialist welfare advice; a private rental support scheme; tenancy training; crisis intervention; resettlement work with ex-offenders. We are the first 'port of call' for people who are homeless in the city & are a lifeline to many who have nowhere else to turn.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Roughly 84% of St Petrock's clients are single adults with no rights to social housing. Our Private Rent and Support (PRS) project help homeless individuals set up tenancies in the private rented sector in the local community instead. The project supports clients with every aspect of moving in & setting up a home, including help with property searches, rent deposits, setting up utility accounts etc. On-going support is provided to landlords & tenants to ensure that tenancies are successfully maintained. Meeting up-front costs is hard on a low income; we try to support clients with deposits, secondhand basic furniture & household items. Many of our PRS clients have never had a place to call their own; these items play a vital role in transforming their accommodation into a home.
