About this cause

The Cogwheel Trust provides affordable counselling in three centres in Cambridgeshire, Cambridge, Ely and Sawston. People struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship issues and other difficulties are assessed and if appropriate, offered weekly counselling sessions. Our counsellors are all highly trained, and many are volunteers, which keeps our costs low. Mental ill-health is no respecter of age, income or background. We see many people who are on benefits or low wages and therefore unable to access private counselling. Our service is highly regarded locally: 70% of people come on their GP's recommendation. Our statistics show that people get their lives back through counselling. Comments support this: ' "it was invaluable", "it literally saved my life", "my life is getting better".

How this cause brings people in the community together

Everyone we help is someone's son or daughter, someone's colleague or friend and often a partner and parent too. Recovering from depression or learning to deal with anxiety transforms a person’s life, enabling them to function again. Helping one person has a wide positive impact on families and the community. Talking with a trained counsellor enables people to understand themselves better and often to see situations differently. Our results show that counselling helps most people feel better, function better at home and work and reduces the risk of self harm or hurting others. We help people who are struggling with some aspect of their life and cannot afford private counselling. We have about 40 part-time highly-trained counsellors, supported by supervisors and a dedicated office team.
