About this cause

We provide two lunch clubs and one cafe club for older people in Shiregreen in Sheffield with a hot lunch, bingo and chance to chat. We use a disabled access community minibus to provide transport - essential as our area is very hilly with little public transport. We receive an annual grant from Sheffield City Council towards our transport costs and sessional costs. Some members help in the club to serve teas, give out bingo tickets etc. making them feel useful. People make friends and mobility and mental health is often improved and feeling that people care about them boosts happiness. Volunteers have found through their contribution their lives are enhanced and some who have suffered depression and isolation begin to value themselves again and really blossom.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We wish to improve an area of the kitchen by installing some new units and an under-counter fridge. This will benefit our hard-working volunteers and enable us to provide a better service to our members. Some of the volunteers are willing to carry out some of the work. We will purchase bespoke unit for the sinks and worktop, replace some floor covering, and re-arrange the layout to be more efficient.
