The Grantham Canal Society

People: Improving people’s mental wellbeing

We would like a mobile welfare unit, including toilet, sink and drink making facilities, for our volunteers who maintain the canal and towpaths, repair locks and provide boat trips.

About this cause

We aim to restore the canal as a haven for exercise, relaxation and the promotion of general wellbeing, and to provide an amenity for people who enjoy walking, running, cycling, canoeing, paddle boarding, fishing, boating, volunteering, or just being by water and wildlife. A canal is a particularly important asset at a time when doctors are prescribing walking along canal towpaths to combat depression.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We're a group who maintain and improve the canal as a great asset for the local community. There are opportunities for both young and old alike to get involved and improve their health, wellbeing and happiness. Statistics have shown that being close to water helps to combat depression and delivers positive impacts on mental health and wellbeing.
