About this cause

The Friends of Cedar House support the work of the home situated in Harefield offering a range of care. The purpose of the friends is to build a bridge between the community & residents of the home. To support them in having more choice in their everyday lives. The home has 42 residents. Some frail, some in residential care, some have nursing needs & some have mild or severe dementia. We also work with family members and friends. We have volunteers from the local community from churches, schools & businesses. Through 1:1 support residents feel less lonely & isolated. By increasing the range of activities & opportunities residents have more choice in the daily lives, and are able to focus on the things that interests them & are able to meet people from outside the home that visit them.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The residents of the care home are a forgotten part of the community. This project aims to keep them happier. It will also help volunteers understand the ageing process & dementia. We will buy a sensory case which will be kept at the home. Volunteers will be made aware of it & where it is kept so they can take it into residents rooms when they want to spend some time with them. It will be agreed with staff in advance who this is appropriate for. The sensory case is suitable for anybody with dementia. It's mobile nature means that it can be used with people who are confined to their beds. We are working with local schools, churches & businesses to recruit suitable volunteers. Current & former family members also volunteer.
