St Mark's Church, Harrogate community kitchen

Community Development

Our kitchen is in need of renovation. The layout has been good, but the cupboards and some other equipment are worn out from constant use.

About this cause

St Mark’s Church, Harrogate contains people motivated by Christian love to serve and welcome all in our community. There are many volunteers who help with daytime and evening activities besides different rooms in the building being let out to community groups for training and concerts etc. Last year a survey of the unmet needs in Harrogate was carried out by a paid employee, which has been endorsed by Harrogate council. We are responding to this in a number of ways, especially regards loneliness. The Oatlands Community group have used the foyer and kitchen for their Tuki café and we hope this will continue. There are many ways that we engage with the local community, running an “open church” every weekday morning for example, which includes a different activity each day.

How this cause brings people in the community together

As mentioned above, many people from the community come into the building for a variety of reasons during the day and evening. People with different needs will benefit, including those with disabilities and on work experience from social projects. Several outside groups hire the rooms and have use of the kitchen. Refreshments are served by adults and young people every Sunday, besides every weekday. There is an Over 60s lunch served every month, see photo. There is also a weekly group "Lighthouse" those with learning disabilities. The kitchen is now 17years old and needs to have a refit, including the flooring and some equipment. The project will involve a kitchen fitter with a time when the kitchen will be out of operation for the normal groups.
