About this cause

Sherman Theatre is one of Wales’s leading producing houses, we are a dual lingual organisation with a particular remit for the development and presentation of new writing. The Sherman produces exciting theatre for audiences in and beyond Cardiff . We develop the work of Welsh and Wales based artists, generating opportunities for the citizens of Cardiff to connect with theatre through relevant, inspiring engagement. We are committed to nurturing young and emerging talent and run an extensive Community and Engagement programme, inclusive of local theatre groups and community led productions. Our Paul Hamlyn Foundation funded Sherman 5 scheme is designed to attract audiences from diverse backgrounds who may be first time attenders, championing audience development and accessibility.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Through our Deaf Theatre Club, Sherman Theatre aims to create performances that are fully accessible to members of the local deaf community by providing BSL, visual captioning and additional support to audience members who are deaf or hearing impaired. The Club is open to all members of our existing Sherman 5 programme, a free membership scheme designed to support people who face barriers and/or disadvantage. Working with the deaf community, the Club offers a range of inclusive pre and post performance activities tailored to deaf and hearing impaired audience members. Assisted travel and transport to and from Deaf Club performances is also provided and, upon arrival at the theatre, trained members of staff are available to help members with their ticket collections and bar orders.
