About this cause

Wigton baths trust took over the running of Wigton baths, a community swimming pool in April 2015. Cumbria County Council intended to close the facility. The trust is made up from volunteers from the local community. The pool is Edwardian and there is a long tradition of swimming and much support from the local community. Since April 2015 the baths has extended opening from 3 days to 6, doubled the number of children learning to swim and increased the number of participating schools from 3 to 10. The trust has recruited and trained local people to staff the pool, creating 10 jobs. Since taking over the trust has implemented many improvements to the structure and function of the building and offered a greater variety of water based activities.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The increased water safety skills will benefit the individuals trained as well as improving health and knowledge in the community. Specific sessions in water safety and prevention of drowning will provide training for young people through Rookie Lifeguard Sessions and gaining RLSS certificates. This will benefit young people aged between 8 - 16 years. This will involve supervision by the Baths Manager and specialist training sessions led by Staff with the appropriate qualification. The sessions will be publicised through Schools and Swimming Clubs to increase participation.
