About this cause

We work in disadvantaged areas of the Wigan Borough. We work with families with children pre-birth to 17 years who experience conflict and relationship difficulties to such an extent that social and emotional well-being is affected. Through mediation we bring people together to talk about their difficulties, hear and understand each other and decide how to make changes that benefit everyone. Examples include separated parents who need to decide on co-parenting and young people and their parents wanting to repair relationships. We work with adults who suffer loneliness and isolation. Volunteer befreinders give company, raise their sense of self worth and support them to engage in community resources such as local groups where they can make friends and gain skills and confidence.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Befriending benefits the community by helping local people play a bigger part in community life. The service user and volunteer befriender meet on a regular basis to have a chat, get out of the house and engage in local resources. This might start by having meeting at home or going out for a coffee or walk; the aim is for the service user to gain confidence to find a social activity that they can enjoy on a regular basis once the befriending relationship ends. The service will target people aged 55 and over who lack the confidence and self esteem and whose social network is limited. The work will involve volunteers who will be supervised by Resolutions staff and the service user. Others who are indirectly involved would be community groups such as those for the elderly or craft group.
