About this cause
Home-Start Shepway is a registered charity based in Folkestone, Kent covering the whole of the Shepway, including remote and rural areas. Our aim is to provide practical and emotional support to families with young children, helping to prevent family crisis and breakdown. By providing early intervention within the family home we can help with self-development and learning opportunities, to show them a way to turn things around together.Home visiting volunteers offer one-to-one support to families working alongside them to help to identify their needs and ways to help them improve their lives. Weekly drop-in groups provide a safe, friendly environment for parents and children to join in with free, fun, educational activities.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Families are made to feel safe and secure and are able to enjoy doing things together by the support and friendship from Home-Start. Parents can develop their skills and experiences to the benefit of the whole family. Self-esteem and self-confidence are increased and parents feel able to take up new learning opportunities and life skills. Volunteers provide a positive role model to children, peer support to parents and help to develop support structures for the family. Families are encouraged to learn what services are available in the community and how to use them, in turn they encourage other parents to do the same. Education and training opportunities are provided and encouragement given for parents to take up voluntary or paid work & families enjoy and benefit from group sessions.
