About this cause

St Werburghs City Farm is a green oasis in the heart of Bristol that connects people to their food, the environment and the local community. It is free to attend and open 7 days a week, attracting over 40,000 visitors per year. Since 1980 we have been delivering a range of services for some of Bristol’s most disadvantaged residents, this includes our Youth Development Project which engages 1,000s of disadvantaged young people aged 11 to 18 in activities that build their practical and personal skills, helping them to develop their confidence and self esteem, improving their employability and life chances. They are referred to us via organisations such as Young Carers, 1625 Independent people, Bristol Youth Offending team, Include, and the Bristol Hospital Education Service.

How this cause brings people in the community together

In 2002 we took on the lease of a 3-acre derelict pig farm called Boiling Wells. The site had become a hotspot for prostitution, drug use & fly-tipping. We trained and supported young people & other volunteers to transform the site into a green wildlife haven and unique community space. Despite ongoing improvements carried out, some areas need urgent attention; we desperately need to build a new wheel chair friendly compost toilet and improve accessibility. This project will give local disadvantaged young people, particularly those ‘Not in Education, Employment or Training‘(NEETS) & other volunteers, a chance to develop personal & practical skills through working together to ‘make over’ the site. This will leave a lasting legacy for thousands of people to benefit for years to come.
