About this cause

Hellifield Institute has been run as a Village Hall for over 100 years. The Institute now provides facilities to villagers of all age groups to come together and enjoy social activities. An example is the programme of Saturday coffee mornings run virtually every week of the year by one village organisation or another. Other activities include table Tennis, Badminton, Short Mat Bowls, Yoga, Flower Club, Cancer drop-in Centre, Brownies, Drama Group, Women's Institute etc. The Institute is at the centre of village life, both geographically and culturally, and provides a place for villagers to meet and be entertained without the need to travel to larger centres of population. In addition to providing fitness opportunities, the sports activities have increased social cohesion in the village.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The rebuild/refurbishment benefits the whole community by enabling the Village Hall to continue in operation in the immediate future and for many years to come. Three quotations have been received, and the work has been awarded to a local builder. Benefits will accrue to all the users of the hall (see the activities described earlier in this document). The hands-on team of eight trustees are working hard to attract new users to the hall and have also commissioned other mini-projects to complement the roof renewal. Other than the builder, the project will be overseen by two of the Institute's trustees (the Chairman and the Buildings Supervisor) and it is intended that the building will remain open for use throughout.
