About this cause

The Institute has been a voluntarily run community cinema since 1926. Films are shown daily with over 44,000 individual attendances in 2015/16 coming from an area 25 miles around the hall covering South Powys, Swansea Neat Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire. It is the valley venue for eisdeddfodau, school plays, theatre performances and it also hosts and subsidises the local Cylch. The Institute enriches the lives of the people by providing access to media which would otherwise be inaccessible to them because of cost or geography. It continues to be central to the community as a venue for meeting, recreation, entertainment, volunteering, education, training and preparation for employment including Duke of Ediburgh placements providing unique access to media, business and technology

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our audiences are drawn from a wide socio economic grouping they are 'valleys people' who have a strong sense of ownership of the Institute. This development will broaden the scope of programming that the hall can provide by increasing the film choice available & enfranchising audiences previously not catered for. The Cylch(play group) and D. of Edinburgh will continue to be supported The main auditorium will be divided in two making two cinemas in the same space of roughly 300 seats each, the stage will remain. An 'acoustic wall' will be built & the latest projection and sound equipment installed The project is complex and requires the services of professionals including architects, asbestos surveyors, QS and engineering calcs to be undertaken before the building work can commence
