About this cause

Our organisation supports people (aged 13-80+) who are not only disadvantaged through having a learning disability but who also face social isolation, because of the very rural nature of west Northumberland where they live. We improve our members’ quality of life and their life-chances by providing a wide range of local, easily-accessible social, leisure and sporting activities linked to learning/training opportunities - supplemented by on-going individual support. Our services and the opportunities we offer break down the barriers to disadvantage that living with a disability confers and also makes meaningful social integration a reality for our members - cementing the positive change we have witnessed in people who have previously led isolated or restricted lives.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The group will run for approximately 25 sessions between March and September 2017 in Prudhoe Methodist Church led by Gateway sessional workers and a volunteer. For many members this is the only such service they can access in their own community; for some it is their only form of socialising amongst their peers outside the immediate family/residential home. Easily-accessible social and leisure activities will allow 12 members to enjoy:- ● improved personal and social skills, especially communication skills ● enhanced life chances ● increased self-esteem and self-confidence ● sustained friendships and social networks ● improved health and well-being ● reduced social isolation • a greater ability and capability of accessing mainstream activities and experiencing wider social integration
