About the Project
Respite care allows people with neurological conditions and carers to have time to themselves. Individuals gain new skills; improve social interaction & self-confidence; and reduce depression and isolation. Specialist daily respite facilities in Cornwall for people with MS are almost non-existent and there is a shortage for those with other neurological conditions. We have been working with expert arts and crafts teachers offering activities sessions designed for people with a range of abilities. As well as the joy of participating these can improve fine motor skills, cognitive ability and self-esteem. In order to facilitate these sessions we would like to purchase a range of specialist equipment such as games, gel pads, wheelchair cushion mattresses and weighted paintbrushes.
About the Charity
It is the only purpose built facility in Cornwall providing therapies, information, support and advice to people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neurological conditions. We support around 70 people a day from across Cornwall. In addition we offer a weekly Outreach service in West Cornwall. Our services improve health and well-being - physically, emotionally and psychologically. For example physiotherapy/occupational therapy to improve mobility, speech, cognitive function, and oxygen therapy for improved circulation, fatigue and other physical symptoms. Counselling can help with the emotional aspects of living with a long-term condition and our day respite service reduces isolation for both the carers and those with the condition.
