About this cause
The West Somerset Railway is a 23-mile steam heritage railway. Established in 1871, it's one of the largest tourist attractions in the area, bringing around 200,000 visitors each year. The West Somerset Railway Association is a community-led, member-driven charity whose aim is to preserve the heritage railway, promote education, ensure community involvement and leave a legacy for future generations.
How this cause brings people in the community together
The average age of our volunteers is 60, so we will be engaging with some of the most vulnerable groups in the area. Many live in rural, isolated locations, leading to loneliness and mental health issues. Many have no transport, so their local station has become a community hub to meet, share ideas and run small projects. The project will also encourage physical activity and teamwork.
