About this cause

Portreath Surf Life Saving Club is run by a group of volunteers who coach members from age five upwards to the highest standards in beach safety, lifesaving, rescue and fitness skills through structured quality controlled training and awards programmes, enabling many members to pass their lifesaving exams. The sport replicates skills needed to save a life, building confidence, fitness and ability to respond to life threatening situations. Members train all year round and qualify to the highest standards set by the Surf Life Saving Association of GB. The Club's aim is to prevent the loss of life on Portreath Beach and many of its members go on to be employed by the RNLI as Beach Lifeguards both at Portreath Beach and various other locations.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The club would like to purchase additional equipment for the Nipper Section (ages 5-13). It's membership is increasing and this would enable the club volunteers to coach more children in the sport to build their confidence and fitness as well as giving them structured training in beach, sea and lifesaving skills from which the community and other coastal users could benefit. Much of the catchment area of the club is officially classified as deprived and therefore many parents cannot afford to buy their own equipment. The ultimate aim being to keep the beach safe and prevent the loss of life
