About this cause
Swim Torquay's Plainmoor Community Pool is the only centre in the Plainmoor area of Torquay where all age ranges, from babies in the Parents and Tots group, to senior Aquafit and watermobility remedial group clients, can mix and engage in healthy exercise and meet for social activities, addressing problems of social isolation. A source of healthy exercise for the community, the pool provides swimming lessons for children, adults, and 25 local schools – a vital service in a coastal community. Swim Torquay introduces and runs its programmes with the support of the community, but is dependent on fundraising to subsidise the wide range of activities provided. As it is not run by the council, it has to self-fund its community programme in order to raise at least £20,000 per year.
How this cause brings people in the community together
The community pool provides a centre in Plainmoor, Torquay, where all age ranges can mix and engage in healthy exercise and use its meeting room for social activities, e.g. coffee mornings. 'Parents and Tots' and senior Aquafit groups also meet for refreshments after their sessions, and the resulting bonds between members assist in overcoming problems of inclusion and loneliness.
