We plan to expand our team by teaching life-saving skills and how to relieve pain and suffering, so we can help save lives across Devon.

About this cause
BASICS (British Association for Immediate Care) Devon is a network of 13 emergency volunteer medics who provide immediate access to specialist medical care at the scene of an accident or illness. The volunteers make themselves available around the clock throughout the year, responding to incidents at the request of the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust. In 2018 they responded to approximately 422 call outs in Devon and its surrounding areas, the trust receives 3000 calls a day. BASICS Devon receives no government funding and relies solely on donations. BASICS Devon is keen to reduce response times so more patients can be treated to relieve pain and suffering and to help save lives.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Our doctors are educators, teaching vital life-saving skills, committed to accessing schools and community groups to offer first aid training. In 2018, 71 call-outs were cardiac arrests, and basic CPR training can increase the chances of survival significantly. We work closely with other emergency services and want to encourage people to come forward to learn life-saving skills.
