The Mustard Tree Foundation aims to respond to the needs of marginalised or overlooked communities and individuals across Reading. We are currently running four projects which, in 2018, supported over 300 beneficiaries, thanks to the dedication of 130 volunteers. Projects currently being run by are: Lifeline, which provides counselling to people affected by pregnancy loss; Starting Point, which mentors young people; Rahab, which reaches out to those involved in sexual exploitation; and, the focus of this application, Engage Befriending.
Engage Befriending is a Mustard Tree project which brings volunteers into the homes of isolated older people. Befrienders spend their time chatting or sharing with the resident. If the older person is able to, they may go out together to a local café or community activity, meeting other people. This really benefits the older person who may not have anyone else to talk to in the week.
