About this cause
YSS is a local charity that has been around for over 30 years, supporting some of the most vulnerable children, young people, adults and families. Our Worcestershire Young Carers service supports 550 young carers aged 7 to 24. Their caring role may be for a parent, sibling or grandparent; the caring can be varied, ranging from giving medication, to cooking, cleaning, bathing, looking after siblings and providing emotional support. It can affect a young person's health, social life and self-confidence, and 26% have been bullied at school as a result. We provide the emotional and practical support that the young carers need, ranging from mentoring, monthly clubs, short breaks and 1-2-1 support, as well as help with education, training and employment issues.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Being a young carer can have a big impact on so many aspects of growing up: young carers are more likely to be bullied at school, less likely to stay in education, employment or training, and tend to have lower aspirations. This project will bring young carers and volunteers together, ensuring that young carers become full and happy members of their community, to help prevent isolation.
