Grassroots works to prevent suicide by enabling open and courageous conversations in the community. We seek to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage help-seeking. Research shows that 72% of those who die by suicide have not engaged with traditional support services. We want to make it easier for people thinking about suicide to access timely and effective support. Ultimately, everything we do is about preventing suicide. We want to increase people’s confidence, knowledge and skills, and break down taboos by providing training, free Real Talk workshops, campaigns, and digital resources such as the Stay Alive app. This will help the entire community, but particularly those in areas of social and economic disadvantage, who are more likely to die by suicide.
Our RTs are always oversubscribed. People want to come together and talk about suicide in a safe, free space. 97% of attendees said the RT workshops increased their confidence in talking to others about suicide. 26% wanted to become Grassroots ChangeMakers, who deliver talks, run events, and raise awareness in the community. RTs bring people together, and enable community action and connections.
